Branch County Maps
According to U.S. Geological surveys there are 107 major lakes in the county. The county could change its name from Branch to Lakes and it would fit perfectly. But it just doesn’t sound right (Lakes County). Plus I think we already have a Lake County. Anyway, lakes in Branch County are in Classes and they are Class I, II & III. Lets start with class I lakes, usually bigger and, are lakes already developed and-or capable of future development. Development is not likely on class II lakes because of their size and depth (less than 10 acres). Stream ponds, gravel & marl pits, that water is only visible at certain times of the year is the class III, where development is prohibited. Branch County’s class I and II lakes cover 7,646 acres with Coldwater Lake being the largest single body of water (1610).

Two Major Chains
At least 35 of Branch County’s 107 major lakes are connected to one or more other lakes, rivers or channels that can be normally navigated by boat. The two most extensive lake chains include 15 lakes and lie in seven townships, touching two incorporated communities. One extends from US 12 at Quincy, southwest through eight major lakes and four connecting channels to within three miles of the Indiana, Michigan state line. Approximately 40 miles of shoreline and 2,700 acres of water are in this group. Its value has been further enhanced by completion of a legal lake level control program to maintain the water at the best level for recreational and riparian use.
A second major chain extends from Messenger Lake on US 12 (the location of Branch County Memorial Park) through South Lake, north into Cemetery Lake then through North Lake and Randall Lake, past the Coldwater Country Club and into Morrison Lake. The chain continues into Craig Lake and the Coldwater River, which runs northwest to the St. Joseph River at Union City. The chain has 1,100 acres of water.
